WASHINGTON, D.C., April 27, 2012—The Agriculture Department’s Plant and Animal Health Inspection Service should grant non-regulated status to a new variety of herbicide-tolerant corn, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation. Approval of DAS-40278-9, the regulatory name of the genetically engineered corn variety, will provide farmers an important alternative to manage hard-to-control weeds and respond to potential herbicide resistance.

“The American Farm Bureau Federation is encouraged that the Senate Agriculture Committee approved its bipartisan farm bill and sent it forward to the full Senate for consideration. The bill is not perfect, but it is a suitable policy vehicle with solid framework on which to make further improvements. Certainly, having a bill in place this year is in the best interests of all farmers.

Total 2011 production of cattle and calves and hogs and pigs for the United States totaled 72.6 billion pounds, up 1 percent from 2010. Production increased 2 percent for hogs and pigs and increased slightly for cattle and calves.

Alma, KS, (AgPR), April 26, 2012 – USDA and California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) announced the discovery of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in California this week. BSE is a chronic, degenerative disease affecting the central nervous system of cattle. The case was detected in a dairy cow from Central California that was not presented for human consumption.
