American Agri-Women Midyear Meeting 2012

Omaha, NE, (AgPR), February 14, 2012 – The 2012 American Agri-Women (AAW) Midyear Meeting will be in Nebraska City, NE., Thursday, March 29 through Sunday, April 1st, at Lied Lodge. The AAW Midyear meeting focus will be to discuss current policies and positions under the direction of Anna Morrison, AAW StART (Strategic Action Response Team) coordinator. Speakers, who will present in-depth focus on vital issues facing the agricultural industry, include Dr. Gary E. Sides, Cattle Nutritionist, Pfizer Animal Health, and Melissa Keyes, Nebraska Agricultural Youth Council, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. There will be a panel discussion on animal rights, moderated by Mindy Paterson, AAW Horse Welfare chairwoman.

Farmers Reach Out to Consumers During Food Check-Out Week

As they have done for the past decade and a half, farmer and rancher members of many local Farm Bureaus will reach out to consumers in their communities during Food Check-Out Week (Feb. 19-25 this year). The official theme of the week is “Stretching Your Grocery Dollar With Healthy, Nutritious Food.” The theme reflects the continuing reality that many Americans are feeling an economic squeeze and as a result, eat out less often and prepare more meals at home.

Offering practical information and tips on how to put nutritious meals on the table with fewer dollars is just one aspect of Food Check-Out Week. Many participating farmers and ranchers also are committed to responding to broader questions consumers may have about food—how it is grown or raised and long-term effects on people’s health and the planet.

Ever heard of the hype cycle?

Created by Internet consulting firm Gartner, Inc., the theory goes like this. New technology goes through a cycle, including a “technology trigger” phase, in which it generates excitement and press coverage; a “peak of inflated expectations” phase, in which the hype leads to unrealistic expectations; a “trough of disillusionment” phase, in which the technology fails to meet expectations; followed by a “slope of enlightenment” phase, in which the hype has subsided but some businesses continue to use the technology for its actual benefits; and, finally, the “plateau of productivity” phase, in which the practical benefits become accepted as part of normal business.

Snaffle Bit Education

When it comes to California, the things you may think of are our beaches, Yosemite, smog, and the Napa Valley. I, Ty Ayers, call Napa Valley my home. California is also known for its great snaffle bit horses and the horsemen that train and show them. These horses seem to last a long time. The snaffle bit is the tool of the trade and originated on the west coast with western horsemen.

I start all my horses in a smooth snaffle bit with a martingale. Good feel is a must with a snaffle bit, as it works both sides of a horse’s mouth and not the bars of the horse’s mouth. The first 30 to 60 days is when a horse can learn control of their body in all the correct positions that they will ever need to know.
